DFB AG - joint-stock company
| Two institutions deal jointly with the restoration works and
railway operation on the Furka mountain line. The club, the VFB, as the non-profit financial basis for the reconstruction project takes care of recruiting helpers, of information, media contacts, promotional campaigns, exhibitions and special events concerning publicity work. It also finances important projects of the joint-stock company. The joint-stock company, the DFB, is responsible for management and the maintenance of the rolling stock, the line and facilities and the buildings, as well as for commercial aspects and marketing measures. It also has to guarantee compliance with safety regulations and the appropriate training of staff. |
| DFB AG - Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway |
| In 1985, Dampfbahn Furka-Bergstrecke AG (Furka Cogwheel Steam
Railway Company - DFB) with registered office in Oberwald was founded as the
company legally responsible towards public authorities and the law. It was
granted an operating licence in 1990and also took possession of the line and
facilities between Realp and Gletsch. In 2006, the business enterprise had a total of 12,364 shareholders, resident all over the world, who have raised a share capital of 15 million Swiss francs up to now. Also in 1990, in an operation which attracted international interest, several steam locomotives that had originally been constructed in Switzerland were brought back from the jungle of Vietnam. So the two former FO engines, HG 3/4 No. 1 and 9, also found their way back to the Furka. After a thorough overhaul, these two locomotives are nowadays used most often to provide tractive power. The DFB is also the proprietor of the rolling stock. With its share capital it guarantees the financing and as the contracting agency, it bears full responsibility during renovation and operation. As the holder of a Swiss Federal operating licence, the DFB, like other Swiss private railways, is under the supervision of the Federal Office for Transport (BAV) which by law regulates and checks railway operation, the structural and technical standards as well as the acceptance of vehicles and lines. As required by the supervisory authority, a full-time salaried manager co-ordinates the railway operation. He is assisted by over 50 members of staff in the most varied occupations who are responsible for the train service, the hauling of trains, construction, maintenance and commercial aspects. Almost all the workers place their leisure time at the DFB's disposal free of charge. Only a few members of staff are employed seasonally or for payment. The trains run in accordance with the operating regulations of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGB). The DFB staff is trained by the company itself and then officially examined. In this way, all the relevant safety regulations for railway operation are fulfilled. All tasks - such as relating to management, secretariat, administration, marketing, commercial services and finances - are carried out in working groups under the supervision of experts. Individual projects are also delegated to the Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway Club (VFB) to be implemented. The DFB Board as the supervisory body, monitors all essential works. During the first season between Realp and Gletsch (summer 2006), a total of 24,000 passengers were conveyed in 219 runs on 68 days of operation. |
